Five Most Surprising & Disappointing WNBA Teams in 2024
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Most Surprising

Seattle Storm

Definitely one of the most improved teams from the 2023 season, the Seattle Storm have built a super team so far. In 2023 the Storm did fall 11-29, right now they are 17-8 and are eyeing the playoffs. The Storm have the third best defensive rating, they score on average the third most points, and average second most in rebounds. The Storm only allow on average 77.6 points to their opponents, and are averaging 84.3 points per game. The Storm are third best defensive wise when it comes to opponents three point and field goal shooting, as they are vying for a championship this year the Storm have a lockdown defense and an offensive to keep them in games.

Minnesota Lynx

The Minnesota Lynx are definitely one team to be surprised about, as they have taken a huge leap in comparison to their 2023 season. This year, the Lynx have won the Commissioner’s Cup and are 17-8, looking to win a championship. With possible Defensive Player of the Year Napheesa Collier leading the way, the Lynx have shown they are very much competing for a title this year, with the Lynx having the best three point percentage in the league, however the big thing for the Lynx is their defense. The Lynx only allow on average 75 points to their opponents, and on average their opponents are shooting 28.1% from the three which defensive wise is the best in the league. History shows winners of the Commissioner’s Cup make it to the finals, and right now the Lynx are right in that mix.

Indiana Fever

The Indiana Fever are one of the most surprising teams right now based on the past alone. In the beginning of the season, the Fever were already projected to have a lottery pick due to their first five losses in the season. Now, the Indiana Fever are eyeing the playoffs, sitting at 11-15, whereas in 2023 the Fever went 13-27, so they are already going to exceed the win count from last year. The Fever right now have the second best field goal percentage, and are improving each game in comparison to the first few weeks when the season started. What has been the most surprising from the Fever is the duo in Caitlin Clark and Aaliyah Boston who are taking charge leading the Fever to wins alongside Kelsey Mitchell. Expect to see the Fever in the playoffs.

Most Disappointing

Dallas Wings

The Dallas Wings are a different kind of disappointing, as they have dealt with so many injuries that you can almost sympathize with the Wings. Coming off a 22-18 record in 2023, the Wings are looking at a lottery pick sitting at 6-19 right now. However, the Wings will be getting back Satou Sabally after the Olympics are over, but it is honestly too late for a huge comeback. A lot of people projected the Wings to be a top five team, and it is unfortunate that injuries do happen, but the Wings really needed to make the most out of 2024. For 2025, the Wings have Satoua Sabally and Natasha Howard contracts expiring, and in 2026 Arike Ogunbowale’s contract expiring. The Wings have a window and it is closing very quickly, and right now the Wings season is pretty much over.

Atlanta Dream

The Atlanta Dream are honestly a mess, they had a 19-21 record in 2023 but are right now sitting at 7-17. The Atlanta Dream are the second worst team in three point percentage, dead last in field goal percentage, and dead last in averaging points per game. Before the Olympic break, the Dream were on an eight game losing streak, and even worse, they do not own their first round pick for the 2025 draft. The Dream would be projected to have a lottery pick, but that pick will belong to the Washington Mystics. The Dream’s future is looking rough.
