Former Chicago Sky Star Chennedy Carter Sends Message After Indiana Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Indiana Fever are one of the most injured teams in the WNBA, but that didn’t stop them from winning on Sunday. Veteran guard Kelsey Mitchell led with 38 points (11-22 FG, 5-8 3 PT) in 40 minutes, which is the highest-scoring individual game in the league this season. She also added six assists in the 99-93 overtime victory vs. the Connecticut Sun.

Fellow veteran Chennedy Carter has yet to play this year after averaging 17.5 points for the Chicago Sky in 2024. However, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft still chimed in about Mitchell’s heroic performance on social media after the game.

“I can’t even lie, the way Kelsey hooped tonight lowkey the best buckets all season,” she said.

Indiana entered the game without generational superstar Caitlin Clark (groin) as well as veterans Sydney Colson (knee) and Aari McDonald (knee). Fellow guard Sophie Cunningham also left with a knee injury in the second quarter. The team needed someone to carry it in the face of adversity, and Mitchell came through.

Kelsey Mitchell Has Saved Fever in Difficult Time

Sunday wasn’t the first time this season that Mitchell delivered when Indiana needed it most. The three-time All-Star now has five 20-plus-point games in August alone, including a 34-point outing in a 100-91 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on August 5.

Clark hasn’t played since July 15, but Mitchell has helped keep the Fever in playoff position anyway. The 29-year-old had a 35-point performance in a 93-78 win over the Chicago Sky on July 27, and leads the team with a career-high 20.4 points per game. She’s now tied with Sparks star Kelsey Plum for third in the WNBA in scoring.

The Fever took Mitchell No. 2 overall in the 2018 draft, and she made the All-Rookie Team that season. The team designated her as a core player entering free agency this past offseason before giving her a supermax deal for 2025. Her one-year, $249,244 contract makes her the highest-paid player in the league this year.

The win brings Indiana’s record to 19-16, good for the league’s seventh seed. It’s just .002 winning percentage points behind the Golden State Valkyries, who are 18-15. The top eight squads at the end of the regular season make the playoffs.

Up next for the Fever is a home date with the Minnesota Lynx, who occupy the No. 1 seed at 28-5. However, WNBA scoring leader and MVP favorite Napheesa Collier (23.5 PPG) will be out with an ankle injury.

After that, Indiana will play Minnesota on the road before facing the Seattle Storm, Sparks, and Valkyries.
