Former Fever Player Getting Roasted After Indiana Wins WNBA Tournament originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Indiana Fever defeated the Minnesota Lynx 74-59 on Tuesday night in the Commissioner’s Cup championship. They did it without star guard Caitlin Clark as she missed her third consecutive game with a groin injury.

After the game, focus shifted to one player who is no longer a part of the Fever: forward DeWanna Bonner. Last Wednesday, Indiana waived Bonner after appearing in just nine games for the team.

The WNBA’s third all-time leading scorer signed with the Fever as a free agent this past offseason and expected to play a big role. Instead, Indiana coach Stephanie White had other plans, bringing Bonner off the bench in six of the games she played.

Her minutes then dropped from 31.8 last year with the Connecticut Sun to 21.3 this season. The 37-year-old wasn’t thrilled, and after stepping away from the team, the Fever honored her request to leave permanently and waived her after the “fit didn’t work out.”

Fever fans began roasting Bonner after defeating the Lynx, with many cracking jokes and others thanking her for leaving.

“DeWanna Bonner coulda waited a week and got this commissioner’s cup bread,” one fan said.

“Thanks Dewanna Bonner we couldn’t have done this without you quitting on the team,” another wrote.

“When the office lottery ticket hits a week after you walk out,” added another.

“Poor Dewanna Bonner. Left a week too early hahahaha,” one fan said.

“Thanks to Dewanna Bonner, she made this victory possible by leaving so a hungry player could come in and shine,” another fan added.

“Dewanna Bonner crying right now,” said a fan.

Bonner was drafted No. 5 overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2009 WNBA draft. A two-time WNBA champion and six-time WNBA All-Star, the 6-foot-4 forward spent 10 seasons in Phoenix before playing five for the Sun.
