The Pirates have reached an agreement with right-hander Carson Fulmer on a minor league deal, as reported by Robert Murray of FanSided (X link). The client of Icon Sports Management will join MLB camp as a non-roster invitee.
Pittsburgh had shown interest in the 31-year-old Fulmer as a depth option for a few years now. They claimed the former eighth overall pick off waivers twice during the 2020 season. Although Fulmer never played in an MLB game for Pittsburgh and was designated for assignment early the following year. He has played for five teams over his career spanning parts of eight seasons, with a significant portion of his work coming with the White Sox early on.
After moving between teams in a journeyman fashion, Fulmer found a somewhat stable situation with the Angels. He signed a minor league deal with the Halos in 2023 and made it to the big league roster towards the end of the season. Despite being waived at the end of the season, he returned on another minor league deal and was called up in the early weeks of the ’24 season.
Fulmer remained on the roster for the rest of the season, starting eight of his 37 appearances and pitching a career-high 86 2/3 innings. The Vanderbilt alum posted a 4.15 ERA with a 21.4% strikeout rate slightly below average and issuing walks at a 10.6% rate. The Angels placed him on waivers at the end of the season, making him a minor league free agent once again. He will compete for a spot in Derek Shelton’s bullpen during Spring Training.
