Aljamain Sterling won’t abstain from alcohol just because he’s in fight camp.
In fact, the former UFC bantamweight champion recently admitted to consuming as many as three drinks to cap off a hard day of training. It’s probably not fair to condemn “Funk Master” for his methods considering his success at the highest levels of competition.
In addition, Sterling never finds himself in any alcohol-related trouble.
“If I have a great sparring day, then I’m gonna treat myself in the middle of the camp,” Sterling told former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. “I’m gonna have one to three drinks, I’m gonna knock out early, and I wake up feeling like I’m ready to go again. I feel fresh.”
Not surprisingly, judgy UFC fans creamed Sterling for his admission.
“I think it’s time people stop listening to the taboo myths about drinking and training camp,” a defiant Sterling said on social media. “Everything in moderation, and knowing yourself and what is okay for you.”
Sterling (24-4) recently released his own Funk Harbor rum.
“Funk Master” was expected to continue his featherweight run as part of the UFC 307 pay-per-view (PPV) card next month in Salt Lake City; however, an undisclosed injury forced him from the card. No word yet on when Sterling, 35, plans to make his Octagon return.
