FLINT, Mich. — Although high school basketball season is still a few months away, Flint native and former WNBA player Tonya Edwards understands that a successful season starts with early preparation. Her experience as a professional player and coach reinforces this belief, and young players who admire the Flint star are embracing her message.
That’s why, even in the hot days of summer when kids would typically be at home, student-athletes are putting in the work at Carman-Ainsworth, guided by none other than Edwards herself.
As a way to give back to the community, Edwards is organizing the “Shooting for Excellence” basketball camp, where kids will learn both on and off the court aspects of the game.
Youth athletes will have the opportunity to understand the requirements of pursuing a career in basketball, starting with the basics of the game.
“Initially, we always focus on giving them a solid fundamental base, even with the older kids. I like to start from scratch to provide them with a strong foundation because I believe that the foundation is crucial. It enhances everything they do beyond that, and without a solid base, it’s difficult to progress in the game,” said Edwards. “We want them to recognize that there is more to basketball. We take moments to break down and discuss their aspirations and where they see themselves in the future, fostering social connections with others.”
This is the second session of the camp, running from Monday, August 5, 2024, to Wednesday, August 7, 2024, catering to girls in grades 7th-12th.
