Formula 1 fans believe Charles Leclerc’s Yas Marina comeback outshines Max Verstappen’s Brazil win

The 2024 Formula 1 season delivered several unforgettable moments, with Max Verstappen securing his fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship. The title was clinched in Las Vegas, but it was his remarkable performance at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix that truly solidified his status as a future legend of the sport. Verstappen faced an uphill battle before the race, with one of the wettest events in recent F1 history ahead of him.

During qualifying, Max Verstappen was caught out by one of many red flags, leaving him eliminated in Q2 and adding a five-second penalty to his troubles. Starting from 17th on the grid, he faced a challenging race, especially with his main championship rival, Lando Norris, starting from the front row. However, Verstappen impressed observers, including David Coulthard, with his ability to cut through the pack. He also benefited from a timely safety car that helped him gain ground, ultimately securing the win in dominant fashion, setting fastest lap after fastest lap in the closing stages.

Despite Max Verstappen’s stunning victory, many fans, prompted by a post from the official Formula 1 Instagram page highlighting the best comeback drives of the season, felt that Charles Leclerc’s performance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix outshone the Dutchman’s effort. The post noted that the world champion had made up 16 positions in Brazil to claim victory, while Charles Leclerc’s drive from 19th on the grid in Abu Dhabi was also a thrilling spectacle.

By the end of the first lap, Leclerc had already moved up to 8th, eventually finishing on the podium just 31 seconds behind winner Lando Norris. Alongside Max Verstappen, the post also mentioned George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, and Lando Norris, but many fans pointed out that Leclerc’s comeback, particularly given the number of overtakes he made, was even more impressive than Verstappen’s Sao Paulo charge.

One fan remarked that the Monegasque driver’s performance from P19 to P3 wasn’t being discussed enough, while another highlighted that Charles achieved this without any help from a safety car, virtual safety car, or rain. This sentiment was shared by many, with one fan noting that Charles Leclerc’s drive was impressive precisely because it was completed without the aid of a safety car or red flag. Another fan reiterated this point, stating that Leclerc’s performance was superior, as Max Verstappen had benefited from a red flag, whereas the Ferrari man had neither a red flag nor a safety car to assist him.

The Monegasque driver’s ability to make his comeback without the assistance of a safety car or red flag received considerable praise, with one fan stating that Leclerc’s comeback was the better one, as it was achieved under normal weather conditions, without a safety car, and without having the best car. It was also clear that both drivers had earned great respect for their performances, as another fan commented that Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc were on another level this season, both exceeding expectations with their respective cars.

Charles Leclerc is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to challenge Max Verstappen once more. Throughout his Formula 1 career, the Dutchman has faced off against some of the sport’s top competitors, but Leclerc has rarely been a constant figure on his radar. The 2022 season saw a strong start for Charles Leclerc, as he won two of the first three races and secured pole positions at six of the first eight Grands Prix. Yet, despite this promising beginning, the Monegasque driver’s form faltered, and aside from a victory in Austria, he struggled to maintain that early momentum, failing to claim another win for the rest of the season.

However, Ferrari’s situation has significantly improved, and they are now poised to contend for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships in 2025. For the Monegasque, though, the path to his first title will require him to first outperform his new Maranello teammate, the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. As long as Red Bull’s dominance continues, Verstappen will remain a formidable contender, and unless the team experiences a significant decline in performance, he cannot be ruled out from securing a fifth consecutive championship in the upcoming season.
