The countdown to a historic moment in Formula 1 is underway as Lewis Hamilton prepares to drive a Ferrari for the first time.
The seven-time F1 world champion will join the legendary Maranello team in 2025 after an extraordinary 12-year stint with Mercedes, where he shattered numerous records. Lewis Hamilton’s £39 million-a-year contract with Ferrari was signed even before the 2024 season began, with confirmation in February that he would replace Carlos Sainz for the following year.
Despite his remarkable career, the 2024 season proved challenging for Hamilton. The Brit struggled to find consistency with a Mercedes car that was often difficult to handle. Qualifying was particularly problematic, as he endured four Q1 eliminations and ultimately finished a career-low seventh in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
However, Lewis Hamilton showcased flashes of his legendary brilliance, securing victories at the British Grand Prix and Belgian Grand Prix—his first wins since Jeddah in 2021. His final race with Mercedes in Abu Dhabi featured a vintage performance, where he charged from 16th on the grid to finish fourth, providing a fitting send-off as he gears up for a new chapter at Ferrari.
Fred Vasseur’s Advice: One Emotional Lap, Then Focus Excitement is building among fans for the British driver’s debut in Ferrari red. Due to contractual obligations, Mercedes barred him from participating in Ferrari’s post-season test in Abu Dhabi. However, Ferrari has scheduled Lewis Hamilton’s first test in January at their Fiorano Circuit, with contingency plans to move the session to Mugello or Imola if weather conditions disrupt the schedule. He will also join a Pirelli test in Barcelona in February.
The highly anticipated test is expected to be an emotional moment for both Hamilton and the F1 community. However, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur lightheartedly remarked that Hamilton would only be allowed one lap to savor the occasion before getting back to business.
In an interview with Sky Sports F1, the French manager shared his thoughts on the upcoming test: “We are dependent on the weather, it’s not easy in January. Yeah it’s true that it’s quite emotional because I think he has this moment in his mind for probably 20 years. It means that it will be emotional but it has to be emotional for one lap! And then to be focused.” – the former Alfa Romeo team boss explained.
Can Lewis Hamilton Thrive at Ferrari?
Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari is set to be a defining chapter in his illustrious Formula 1 career, likely his final transfer before retirement. With a record-breaking eighth world championship in his sights, the seven-time champion will be determined to make this opportunity count.
However, questions remain about Hamilton’s ability to succeed with the Maranello-based squad. His recent struggles with Mercedes during the ground-effect era have raised doubts, compounded by the fact that he was outperformed by his younger teammate, George Russell, during the 2024 season.
At Ferrari, the challenges won’t ease. Hamilton will have to contend with Charles Leclerc, widely regarded as one of the fastest drivers in qualifying, as his teammate. Additionally, adapting to new team dynamics, unfamiliar personnel, and potentially even a new working language will add to the complexity of his task.
Former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo has recently weighed in on the matter, emphasizing that clear and cohesive management will be critical for the British driver’s success at the Maranello team starting with the upcoming campaign. According to the ex-Ferrari president, such stability will be essential if the seven-time Formula 1 world champion is to not only challenge Charles Leclerc but also establish himself as a dominant force in the fight for the 2025 world championship.
