Free agent who will swing WNBA championship race won’t sign until midseason

With the WNBA season right around the corner, many of the top free agents have already signed with teams. However, there is one specific free agent who won’t sign until later in the season but could drastically impact the WNBA championship race: Emma Meesman.

Who is Emma Meesman?

WNBA fans may remember Emma Meesman, a two-time All-Star in the league who last played in a WNBA game in 2022. The multi-time EuroLeague MVP is a tremendous player without question. She has found success in the WNBA in the past, but why won’t she sign until midseason?

Mick Talks Hoops, a basketball-related YouTube channel, predicted that Meesman won’t return until after EuroBasket, which ends in July. The channel went as far as to say that the Indiana Fever would “win” the WNBA championship by adding Meesman. Of course, the New York Liberty are the favorites to repeat as champions at the moment, but perhaps adding Meesman would give a team such as the Liberty a slight edge.

With Meesman, it is an interesting situation. There have been European players in the past who came to the WNBA with high expectations, but there was uncertainty as they had not previously played in the league. Meesman, as mentioned, has plenty of WNBA experience. In fact, in addition to being a two-time All-Star, Meesman is also a WNBA champion.

For her career, Meesman has averaged 11.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game in the league. She has also shot 52.2 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from beyond the arc. It should be noted that she only recorded 1.1 three-point attempts per game, but the fact is that she is capable of finding the bottom of the net from deep when necessary.

Meesman played with the Washington Mystics from 2013-2020 ( did not play in the WNBA in 2018). After not playing in the league in 2021, she returned in 2022 with the Chicago Sky. 2022, Messman’s most recent WNBA campaign, saw her average 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Where will Emma Meesman sign?

It remains to be seen which WNBA team will sign Meesman. One has to imagine that almost every contender will have interest in adding her, though. Emma Meesman could prove to be a difference-maker in both the second-half of the regular season and throughout the 2025 WNBA postseason.
