Friday WNBA action was loaded with big games from South Carolina basketball alums

Not that this is something new, but Friday night’s WNBA action was loaded with former South Carolina basketball stars performing at high levels.

The biggest matchup featuring former Gamecocks was the Las Vegas Aces playing at the Indiana Fever for the second game in a row.

As she so often does, A’ja Wilson was dominant, scoring 15 points but pulling down 17 rebounds and adding 2 blocks, 1 assist, and 1 steal. The showing moved her into 4th place all-time in WNBA history in 15-15 stat lines. The Aces’ 78-74 win moves Wilson to 20-1 in her career against the Fever.

On the other end of the floor, Aliyah Boston had a very efficient 14 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor, and she secured 8 rebounds despite missing a short stretch of time following an accidental blow to the face. Boston has set a new franchise record for single-season rebounding, breaking her own record. In just two years in the league, Aliyah Boston owns the two best rebounding seasons in Fever history.

Rookie center Kamilla Cardoso posted one of the best box score efforts of her young career. Playing against a playoff-bound Minnesota Lynx squad, the Chicago Sky post player had another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also blocked 3 shots without committing any personal fouls. Cardoso has the 2nd-most double-doubles for a Sky rookie in team history, behind only teammate Angel Reese.

Allisha Gray, a 2-time WNBA All-Star for the Atlanta Dream, posted the first double-double of her 2024 season as she logged 15 points and 10 rebounds against the Washington Mystics. She also stuffed the stat sheet a bit with 5 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block.

In a lopsided win on the road over the Phoenix Mercury, Connecticut Sun spark plug Ty Harris put up 12 points on 9 shots and added 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

South Carolina basketball fans will get a chance to keep watching some of their favorite players as their pro seasons continue into the postseason. The Aces (A’ja Wilson), Fever (Aliyah Boston and Victaria Saxton), Sun (Ty Harris and Tiffany Mitchell), and Mercury (Mikiah Herbert Harrigan) have clinched spots in the playoffs, and the Sky (Kamilla Cardoso and Kaela Davis) are still in contention for a berth in the postseason that begins on September 22nd.
