Like Grace, Frieda is another Elite Netball Academy athlete who has been with us since the beginning. At seven years old Frieda joined our Mini Netball classes, and now she’s in a franchise pathway and learning to umpire. We chatted to her to find out more.
What age did you start mini netball?
I started Mini netball with Elite when I was seven. We’d just been introduced to netball at school and I wanted to do more of it.
Did you find the sessions fun?
Yes, definitely! We played lots of games which made the sessions fun and the coaches were friendly and kind.
Did skills you learnt at mini netball translate into other areas?
I learnt new skills that I could use in netball at school, as well as the importance of teamwork. And made friends along the way. The sessions were really inclusive, there was quite a mix of people – some who’d played netball before and others who hadn’t. The coaches made sure everyone was included and that we enjoyed it.
Did mini netball sessions kick start your passion for netball?
I loved the classes and they made me want to get better and join a club. I had played a little bit of netball at school but apart from that most of it was new.
What other sports did you do alongside mini netball?
I did a lot of ballet, some tennis and tag rugby, and started to play cricket.
Where are you now on your netball journey?
I play for YMCA U14 1st team – we’ve qualified for regionals this year. I got accepted into West Yorkshire County U15s and the Rhinos pathway. I also train with the U15 Elite High-Performance Centre in Yorkshire and have recently started learning how to umpire.
Did Elite’s mini Netball classes give you a good grounding in the sport?
Yes! The classes provided a great foundation in technical skills plus a good understanding of netball fundamentals eg positions, rules etc. I’d recommend the Mini Netball classes to everyone – they were great fun!
