A’ja Wilson has been a dominant force for Team USA women’s basketball at the Paris Olympics.
Wilson, a former national champion at South Carolina, two-time WNBA MVP, and Olympic gold medalist, had an impressive performance in the team’s 87-68 victory over Germany in Lille, France, with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, four steals, and one block.
In the first two games of pool play, Wilson scored 24 and 23 points, contributing to Team USA’s undefeated record entering the medal rounds.
“We came here to go to Paris, and that’s the main goal,” Wilson commented after the 19-point win. “I’m glad that we were able to do this. We’re going to enjoy it, but we’re not satisfied.”
Wilson made a significant impact in the third and fourth quarters by making defensive stops that led to crucial scores.
This year’s team is filled with top WNBA players like Breanna Stewart, Kelsey Plum, and Sabrina Ionescu. Wilson sees this star-studded lineup as an advantage in pursuing another gold medal.
“It’s incredible,” Wilson expressed. “That’s what makes us legendary. That’s what makes us one of the best teams in the world, that we can sub five in, five out, and there’s no drop-off.”
The team’s chemistry on the court is undeniable, with players utilizing each other’s strengths and making quick adjustments during games.
Although the team hasn’t played together for long, Wilson believes their strong team dynamic has been crucial to their high-level performance.
“There’s a lot of great players out there, but I think we have probably one of the best locker rooms I’ve ever been a part of,” Wilson noted. “We’re just really fun. We’re gelling together. You’d be surprised that we just got together right after the WNBA All-Stars.”
Looking ahead, Wilson aims to enhance her footwork and defensive presence on the court.
Wilson and Team USA will face Nigeria in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
“It’s not going to be easy,” Wilson acknowledged. “But we’re definitely going to have fun while doing it.”
