Discussing games from 2024 that excelled in certain aspects, one game that stood out for me was Astro Bot. Released this year, it evoked a strong emotional response from me. While other games may have had more impactful stories and characters, as a passionate gamer, Sony’s PS5 nostalgia trip resonated with the joy center of my brain that hasn’t been used much lately.
Despite owning every PlayStation console since its inception 30 years ago, I never felt a deep emotional connection to Sony’s brand. If I had to choose my favorite gaming brands, it would be Sega and Xbox, with Sega being a prominent part of my childhood and Xbox signaling a new era in gaming as I started my career. PlayStation, in my eyes, was just the cool console in between. I was mistaken.
For me, retro games are not just about the gameplay but also about the nostalgia they bring. In my home office, I have a boxed copy of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive, which serves as a reminder of the unbridled joy of childhood. Late nights battling Robotnik with my brother and cousin are etched in my memory as simpler, perhaps better times.
Astro Bot may have been criticized for being a marketing ploy to target PlayStation fans, but I personally don’t see it that way. I don’t analyze it deeply or feel ashamed for not doing so; I simply enjoy it without overthinking.
Gameplay-wise, Astro Bot excels. It’s mechanically sound, creatively designed, and visually and audibly captivating. But it’s more than just a game; it’s a time portal. Similar to my Sonic game, it transports me to another era. The classic character Bots you encounter and collect add depth to the experience, especially when exploring the interactive museum hub. However, one moment stood out the most.
Without giving away spoilers, towards the end of Astro’s journey, there’s a shift to a 3D homage to classic side-scrolling shooters, accompanied by the original PlayStation boot jingle. This moment, at the culmination of a nostalgic gaming trip, inexplicably brought tears to my eyes.
Video games hold a special place in my heart, shaping my career and guiding my professional endeavors. Amidst the exhaustion and challenges of the job, there are rare moments like these that reignite the pure joy and wonder of gaming, making me feel like a child again. For that reason, I hold Astro Bot in high regard, and my appreciation for PlayStation has grown.
