Garrett Wilson hoping this is the week ‘it all clicks’ with Jets offense

LONDON — The first four weeks of the season have not gone the way anyone around the Jets expected for wide receiver Garrett Wilson. 

The third-year receiver has only 20 catches for 191 yards and one touchdown.

He has looked out of sync with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and you can sense his growing frustration.

Wilson and the Jets hope that all changes Sunday against the Vikings.

“I feel like we always have good weeks of practice,” Wilson said of his chemistry with Rodgers. “So now, it’s just about translating it to Sunday. So hopefully, you know, this is the week it all clicks for sure.” 

The 4-0 Vikings have played good defense this season, but if they have a weakness, it is in the passing game, where they rank dead last in passing yards allowed in the NFL.

Cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and Byron Murphy are not in the same class as the corners that Wilson has seen lately, like Patrick Surtain last week and L’Jarius Sneed in Week 2. 

That could lead to a breakout game for Wilson, who has yet to have 70 receiving yards in a game this season.

Last week, in the fourth quarter, he appeared to not turn when Rodgers wanted him to, and a pass sailed incomplete. Rodgers stared at him after the throw.

“It’s just the details, you know?” Rodgers said. “We’ve got to be on the same page, so the conversations we have are important, me seeing the game through his eyes, him seeing the game through my eyes, and you know, just go out there and execute. I don’t think it’s a big change; things are close, and one of these weeks, we’ll put it all together.” 

Wilson raised eyebrows this week when he appeared on the “Bart and Hahn” radio show and seemed to criticize offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Wilson clarified what he meant on Friday. 

“You know, I was asked a specific question. I answered the question,” Wilson said. “Whether I like the question or not, it doesn’t really matter, but you know, I could have gone about answering it a better way. You know, at the end of the day, I just go out and play football. I’m going to do my job, all that stuff is out of my control.” 

Wilson may be bumped to WR2 or at least 1A if the Jets trade for Davante Adams. Wilson was asked how he felt about a potential partnership with Adams. 

“That’d be cool, man,” Wilson said. “I feel like it’s cool. You know, if we get him over here, like I always say, if someone can help us win, you know, let’s do it.”
