The Braves have acquired infielder Cavan Biggio from the Giants, as reported by Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. According to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Giants will receive cash considerations in exchange for Biggio. Despite the trade deadline passing, Biggio, who is on a minor league deal, was eligible to be traded. However, since the acquisition took place in September, Biggio will not be able to participate in the postseason with the Braves.
Biggio, 29, was a fifth-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2016 and made his MLB debut in 2019. He had a strong start to his career, earning Rookie of the Year votes in his first season by batting .234/.364/.429 in 100 games as the regular second baseman. However, his performance declined over the next two years, with his offensive numbers dropping significantly.
In his most recent full season, Biggio had an above-average offensive campaign while playing various positions. Despite finding success in a utility role, his performance declined this season with the Blue Jays, resulting in his release in August. He eventually signed a minor league deal with the Giants before being traded to the Braves.
Biggio joins the Braves as an injury replacement, adding depth to their infield due to multiple injuries on the roster. While he has struggled this season, his ability to draw walks gives him a solid floor of offensive production. Although he won’t be eligible for the postseason, Biggio can provide support during the regular season while the team’s starters recover from injuries.
Before Biggio can play for the Braves, he will need to be added to the 40-man and active rosters, which may require a corresponding move due to the team’s full 40-man roster. Despite his recent struggles, Biggio’s addition provides the Braves with additional infield depth as they navigate through a challenging season.
