Gilbert Arenas recounted a humorous anecdote about trash-talking a young Dwyane Wade and instantly regretting it. He shared the story on a recent episode of The OGs podcast.
“At the beginning of the 04-05 season, everyone was talking about the Heat because Shaq had joined the team. I casually mentioned treating D-Wade like they did in the Olympics, just play a zone defense. Didn’t think much of it. But after a few games where Wade scored 40 or 45 points, I realized my mistake,” Arenas said.

“I even called Wade at the hotel to clarify that my comments were misconstrued. But when I saw him in warm-up mode before the game, I knew my apology didn’t make a difference. That experience taught me to never speak ill of a player again,” Arenas added.
Arenas wasn’t exaggerating when he mentioned Wade’s dominance that season. During the 2005 playoffs, Wade led the Heat to sweep the Wizards in the second round with impressive stats.
Although Miami lost to the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals that year, Wade guided them to a championship win the following season.
