The upcoming weekend at Bristol is indeed exciting for NASCAR fans for several reasons, including the track’s infamous reputation and the drama that unfolded during the fall race. However, the excitement extends beyond just the three NASCAR races with records on the line.
Kyle Larson of Hendrick Motorsports is aiming for a rare feat this weekend, attempting to win all three NASCAR national series races — the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and NASCAR Cup Series — at the same track in the same weekend, a challenge known as the “Triple Header.” Currently, only Kyle Busch has achieved this record, doing so at Bristol once in 2010 and again in 2017.
Kyle Busch’s Comments on Kyle Larson’s Triple Header Pursuit
Larson came close to securing the triple header earlier this season at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he won the Craftsman Truck Series and Cup Series races but did not win the Xfinity race. He went for it again a Bristol but was unable to secure a victory in the first race of the weekend. He competed in the Weather Guard Truck Race on April 11, finishing in second place.
Ahead of the weekend, before the first race, Kyle Busch commented on Larson’s attempt at the weekend sweep, saying:
“He just tried it at Homestead and came awfully close. Barring a restart late in the going, he had it. That’s what happens with the triples, man. There are so many variables that can come down to whether you get it or not.”
“If somebody can beat Larson off of pit road on the final run of the Cup race and he can’t pass them, that’s what happens in that one. But I’m sure he’ll go and do well, and so be it.” Busch further added.
Other drivers like Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick have also attempted the Triple Header but have not yet been successful, making Busch the only driver to accomplish this feat, doing so twice.
Larson’s Current Season and Record at Bristol
Larson has had a mixed but overall strong start to the current season. At the Cup Series season opener, he finished 20th. In the following races at Atlanta and Circuit of the Americas (COTA), he finished third and 32nd, respectively. He then secured top-10 finishes in the next two races.
At Homestead-Miami, Larson achieved his first victory of the season, bringing his career Cup Series win total to 30. He followed this with a top-five finish at Martinsville. However, at Darlington, he experienced a challenging race, resulting in an early retirement due to incidents.
Larson has a notable record at Bristol Motor Speedway. In the 2024 Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol, he dominated, winning by over seven seconds after leading 462 laps. In the same race in 2023, he finished as the runner-up, earning 46 points. His first Cup Series win at Bristol came in his championship-winning year of 2021, where he led for 175 laps.
With one race of the triple header now complete without a win for Larson, his chances of matching Kyle Busch’s record this weekend are out. However, he still has the SciAps 300 and Food City 500 races to compete in at Bristol.
