Finally, the Golden State Valkyries have unveiled their inaugural roster.
The franchise revealed their player selections for the upcoming debut season on Friday, picking players from 11 of the 12 existing WNBA franchises. Notable selections include Kate Martin from the Las Vegas Aces, Veronica Burton from the Connecticut Sun, and Kayla Thornton from the New York Liberty. Seven out of the 11 selections were players born outside the United States.
General manager Ohemaa Nyanin expressed excitement about the team’s formation, emphasizing the importance of versatility, depth, leadership, defense, and scoring ability in the selected players. The chosen athletes were carefully picked to align with the culture the Valkyries aim to build.
The complete list of selected players includes Monique Billings (Phoenix Mercury), Burton (Connecticut Sun), Maria Conde (Chicago Sky), Temi Fagbenle (Indiana Fever), Carla Leite (Dallas Wings), Martin (Las Vegas Aces), Iliana Rupert (Atlanta Dream), Stephanie Talbot (Los Angeles Sparks), Thornton (New York Liberty), Julie Vanloo (Washington Mystics), and Cecilia Zandalasini (Minnesota Lynx).
The WNBA approved the Bay Area franchise in October 2023, marking a significant expansion in the league after 15 years of stagnation at 12 teams. Prior to the expansion draft, each team protected up to six players, enabling Golden State to secure contracts or negotiating rights with their selected athletes.
Coach Natalie Nakase emphasized the importance of competitiveness, character, and an aggressive playing style in the Valkyries’ selection process. The team values speed and proficient shooting, evident in their diverse player choices.
The inaugural roster showcases a mix of experienced and young players, with a focus on cost-effective contracts to enable future acquisitions. Nyanin highlighted the team’s readiness to engage with free agents and college athletes to strengthen the roster further.
The Valkyries will make their debut on May 16 against the Los Angeles Sparks at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The team has already garnered significant interest in the market, setting a record for season ticket deposits.
