Guilty Gear Strive: Lucy Starter Guide / Image credit: Arc System Works

TL;DR

Lucy is the first guest fighter in the Guilty Gear franchise

She’s equipped with a pistol and Monowire, offering a range of close and distance attacks

Lucy brings Quickhacks with her, new abilities to disrupt and control the flow of battle

Sluggish fighters will be challenged the most, while mobile fighters will be the best bet to counter her

The first deep dive for Guilty Gear Strive’s latest character, Lucy, is here, just days ahead of her launch in-game.

Lucy’s entrance to Guilty Gear Strive marks the first guest character to join the franchise. Lucyna Kushinada hails from the Cyberpunk universe, first appearing in the Netflix adaptation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Lucy is the fourth character introduced in Season 4, following Dizzy, Venom, and Unika. She brings with her a new fighting style that emphasises finesse, long-range reach, and technology.

Lucy joins Guilty Gear Strive

Lucy Kushinada, or Lucy, is a skilled netrunner from the Cyberpunk franchise. Netrunners are specialist hackers who can connect their minds to cyberspace using neural implants. They can infiltrate complex computer systems, be they data banks, security systems, or technologically-enhanced humans.

Lucy will be the first guest character to arrive in the franchise. According to Guilty Gear Strive director Ken Miyauchi, CD Projekt Red was the first studio that Arc System Works approached to facilitate this.

“We also thought about bringing in Ciri from The Witcher 3,” Miyauchi said in an interview with Dexerto, before conversations between the studios settled on Lucy.

As of yet, not much is known about Lucy’s role in the Guilty Gear Strive storyline. There’s little reason to suspect that there will be much rhyme or reason to it, either. The likelihood is that Lucy found a clever way to hack herself into the game and escape Cyberpunk’s Night City.

Lucy joins Guilty Gear Strive on August 21, 2025, as the final character in the additional Season 4 roster.

Gameplay impact

Lucy’s arsenal includes her pistol, offering ranged pokes, and her signature Monowire, a whip that covers a wide range of motion. The Monowire also allows Lucy to close gaps through pull mechanics, while some of her blocks allow her to push back opponents.

These weapons are complemented by her Quickhacks mechanic, allowing her to interrupt and control the rhythm of battle using different abilities. So far, the trailer shows off the following Quickhacks:

Contagion

Energy Siphon

Algorithmic Malfunction

Resistance Glitch

Pacify

Optics Inhibition

These abilities are called through a sub-menu rather than combos, and they leave behind debuff icons borrowed directly from the Cyberpunk games above your opponents’ hitbox. This mechanic also temporarily pauses the action in the game while Lucy injects malicious code into her opponents.

This system will complement Lucy’s long-range monowire and evasive mobility, encouraging strategic use of both in order to control the distance and disrupt your opponent’s rhythm.

Which fighters will be challenged by Lucy?

Lucy’s introduction will challenge sluggish fighters like Potemkin, Anji Mito, and Goldlewis Dickenson, each likely to crack under the pressure of Lucy’s fast, mobile DPS. These slow, big-body characters reliant on predictable approaches will have the toughest time adapting to Lucy’s layered offence and hacking skills.

With the addition of the Quickhack system forcing opponents to react to disruptive debuffs, her battlestyle is going to be unpredictable and lethal up-close. Ramlethal and Testament will be rivalled by Lucy’s whip zoning, while her greater mobility will probably pip them in that respect too.

Which fighters will counter Lucy the best?

Faster fighters such as Chipp Zanuff and Gio are going to stand strong against Lucy’s mobile playstyle. Teleports and strong mix-ups are going to be useful in preventing Lucy’s space-control, while Leo Whitefang’s rush potential is going to close down her potential for constant pressure.

Fan reaction

Lucy’s entrance to Guilty Gear Strive has been well-received by fans so far. That is said with the caveat that she hasn’t been played and tested by the general audience yet.

“She looks pretty damn scary,” wrote DanDoReddit in a response to her starter guide video. This comment was rooted in the fact that Lucy’s monowire and pistol allow her to deal fast, constant DPS that some are saying can easily amount to instakills with the right combos.

Likewise, fans have been commenting on her animation style with praise. “The modern animation techniques used in contemporary games continue to impress me,” wrote one, while another said it’s “absolutely mind-blowing.”

There has, however, been some fair criticism of her movepool. “I expected at least 1 or 2 more specials,” wrote another fan, lamenting the fact that original characters will each be benefiting from extra special moves with the new season patch, and that Lucy will be launching on the back foot.

Conclusion

The Cyberpunk Edgerunner’s appearance in Guilty Gear Strive is going to quickly shake up the current meta with the introduction of the Quickhacks Super, while her lightning-fast mobility is going to provide yet another problem for sluggish fighters to contend with.

Lucy’s introduction to Guilty Gear Strive marks a landmark moment for the franchise. As the first guest character – with one of the biggest gaming franchises out there, no less – it signifies the game’s ever-growing popularity. With Arc System Works also picking up the Marvel Tōkon title, there’s little reason to think the studio won’t keep growing in the fighting game space.
