Description: Working in the primary capacity of an educator, the head coach enhances the student experience and satisfaction as well as raise the College’s image and reputation through building and maintaining a competitive athletic program.  This position works to improve the student’s personal and teamwork skills and provide education, guidance and encouragement.  This position publicizes Hartwick College through positive local and campus communities as well as regionally and/or nationally.  This position is important to the recruitment and retention of students in accordance with college and

Responsibilities:

Oversee and lead the operations of a collegiate athletic team, including instructing scholar-athletes on the rules, fundamentals, regulations, equipment, strategies and techniques of the sport by designing instructions for individual student-athletes and team needs. 

Ability to design and implement match strategies and provide skilled on-court instruction for practice and games.

Responsible for the administrative functions of the athletic program.  This includes recruitment and retention of qualified students in accordance with College standards. Administrative paperwork (budget protocol, travel expenses, compliance obligations, etc.) and general office work including emails and participating in department staff meetings.

Demonstrate commitment to excellence, innovation and diversity by building healthy relationships with the students, responding to their concerns, advising students both personally and academically to contribute to their personal growth and academic success.

Head coaches are expected to retain, at a minimum, the same percentage of student-athletes as non-athletes as calculated for the institution’s overall retention percentage by gender (minus those who are athletes).  In addition, coaches are expected to utilize positive retention efforts in their dealings with student-athletes.  This is inclusive of knowing where, when and to whom to send athletes who have exhibited signs of concern, tracking of athlete’s reasons and decisions, and having regular involvement at the team level with the Center for Student Success (CSS).

Additional responsibilities as assigned by Executive Director of Athletics, including teaching PHED skill courses and PE coaching courses, and oversight of at least one other program’s game management.

Community Service.

Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with all internal and external constituents.

Expected to comply with all applicable College, Federal, State, local, Empire 8 Conference, College Department regulations, rules, policies and procedures.

As a representative of the College, expected to comport oneself in a professional manner at all times, both on and off campus. No inappropriate relationships with students.

Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Other Expectations

Hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches.

General office work (email, database management, phone calls, etc.)

Create budget, order supplies following proper protocol, and stay within defined budget parameters.

Be a positive member of the department by supporting other programs and find ways to be involved for the betterment of the department and College (i.e. Attend Code Blue events, attend events outside athletics, serve on committees, involvement through national organizations).

Attend important College functions and campus activities as required by the Executive Director of Athletics, including Welcome Weekend, True Blue Weekend, and Commencement Weekend.

Qualifications:  Minimum requirements for this position are a Bachelor’s Degree (preferred) from an accredited college or university with between 3 and 5 years of experience in an assistant or head coach position.  Must have or be willing to obtain appropriate licensing for sport.  Must have a valid driver’s license and be insured through the College.  CPR/First Aid/AED certification.

General computer skills including Microsoft software (Word, Office, Excel, etc.)

Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Supervisory skills a plus.

Knowledge of the sport.

Being up to date with safety, rules and regulations and proper certifications.

Ability to provide academic guidance and mentoring to student-athletes.

Ability to multi-task and handle a job with a daily change of pace.

Ability to use independent action, estimating skill, memory, and problem solving skills.

Since this position is based in athletics, there are physical demands related to the specific sport and may include exposure to different climate conditions while coaching or recruiting. 

The employee frequently may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Salary range: $38,000 – $43,000
