Description
The Assistant Tennis Coach at Hobart and William Smith is responsible for assisting with the organization and management of the intercollegiate men’s and women’s tennis teams. This role will involve working with both teams.
Responsibilities of the position include teaching and coaching student-athletes for successful competition, supporting academic success, recruiting potential students, fundraising, developing relationships with alumni and parents, planning team travel, handling administrative tasks, and other assigned duties.
Hobart and William Smith coaches are expected to approach training, competition, mentoring, and recruiting ethically.
Essential Responsibilities:
Teaching and Coaching:
– Teach student-athletes the principles and rules of the sport
– Assist in preparing, implementing, and evaluating practices and matches
– Use digital platforms for training, practice, and match strategy development
– Maintain a high standard of conduct in accordance with institutional, department, NCAA, and Liberty League rules
Counseling and Advisement of Student-Athletes:
– Establish and maintain communication with student-athletes
– Emphasize academic success
– Encourage positive relationships with faculty, deans, and staff
Recruiting:
– Recruit prospective student-athletes under the guidance of the head coach
– Maintain the sport-specific recruiting database
– Recruit student-athletes who align with the academic profile of HWS students
– Communicate with other coaches regarding shared prospects
Professional Development:
– Maintain membership in professional sport organizations
– Pursue educational opportunities
– Participate in department seminars
Community Engagement/Fundraising:
– Promote tennis and Hobart and William Smith Athletics in communities
– Build positive relationships with constituents
– Assist in fundraising activities
– Engage with alums and parents
Operational Team Responsibilities:
– Serve on Athletics Department operational teams
– Assist with department initiatives
Other Information:
This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position. This position is classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the federal Clery Act (1990) and will be required to perform the requirements as a Campus Security Authority pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act (20 U.S.C. §1092 (f) (Clery Act).
This position description is not exhaustive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Evening and weekend work are required. Salary is $48,715 annually.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. A minimum of four years of collegiate tennis and/or coaching experience required. Candidates must demonstrate strong potential to teach, lead and counsel college student-athletes and have enthusiasm for the recruiting duties of the position. The candidate must be a person of integrity, high ethical standards, have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy and mission of HWS Athletics. Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver’s license are vital to fulfilling the responsibilities of this position. CPR and First Aid certification required (can be provided at HWS).
