Draymond Green has shared his thoughts on the moment Klay Thompson informed him and Steph Curry that he was leaving the Golden State Warriors.
Green discussed this on the most recent episode of The Draymond Green Show.
“I’m not sure how to feel about it,” he said. “Klay informed us last week. I don’t know who else he spoke to, but I know he spoke to me, and I’m pretty sure he spoke to Steph last week as well. He just started reflecting on the years we’ve had, how special it’s been.”
Green mentioned that he didn’t try to change Thompson’s mind, but rather listened and respected his decision.
“When Klay told me, I just listened,” he said. “There was no attempt to convince him otherwise or make him reconsider. It was more like, ‘Wow, okay, congrats bro, I’m happy for you, that’s great.’ And of course, to reassure him that it doesn’t change our relationship. It will change things on the basketball court, but our friendships remain intact. They are everlasting.”
Green also revealed that he almost left the Warriors himself. The four-time NBA champion disclosed that he considered joining the Memphis Grizzlies last season.
“I separately called Klay, Steph, and Steve, and told them, ‘I’m leaving. I’m heading to Memphis,’” he said.
Ultimately, the Warriors convinced Green to stay by offering him a four-year, $100 million extension.
