The FIA is eagerly anticipating the final six races of the F1 season, expecting intense emotions as the top teams battle for supremacy. While McLaren is leading in the Constructors’ Championship, the Drivers’ Championship is much closer than it appears, with Norris posing a real threat to Verstappen. The recent strong showing by Norris in Singapore has put Verstappen on notice, and he must now shift his focus from damage limitation to regaining his competitive edge to secure his fourth world title.
With the last update package of the season set to debut at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, the reigning world champions are pushing their limits. Ricciardo’s fastest lap in the Marina Bay race caught the attention of the McLaren team, costing Norris an extra point for the fastest lap (awarded only to top-ten finishers).
After years of dominance by a single driver, the battle between Verstappen and Norris has reignited discussions about awarding an additional point for the fastest lap. This bonus has often seemed arbitrary, achieved in the final stages of the race with fresher tires. The rarity of “hat tricks” further questions the value of this point.
F1, FIA: A Truly Meritocratic Point System?
With 180 points and six fastest-lap opportunities still up for grabs, these points could significantly impact the season’s outcome. Concerns have been raised about teams resorting to tactics to secure these crucial points, especially for drivers outside the top ten.
Attention is particularly focused on Perez and Red Bull’s junior team, Racing Bull, as they might sacrifice drivers for strategic gains. The possibility of extra pit stops solely for securing the fastest lap point adds another layer of complexity to race strategies.
F1, FIA: A Point System in Need of Change
The current point allocation system faces scrutiny amidst increased competition in F1. While races have become more exciting with various teams challenging for wins, the awarding of the fastest lap point in a non-competitive manner has raised concerns. Suggestions have been made to award the point to the pole position driver for a fairer reflection of merit.
The FIA should consider changes, supported by drivers and teams, to ensure a more transparent and merit-based point system. While changes may not happen in the current season, efforts should be made to ensure the Drivers’ Championship is not decided by these additional points.
