A pair of teams fighting for home court in the first round of the playoffs meet up on Saturday, Aug. 30 at PHX Arena in Phoenix where the New York Liberty are visiting the Phoenix Mercury.

These teams enter this matchup separated by half a game in the standings with the Mercury sitting at 24-14 and the defending champions sitting at 24-15. In three previous meetings this season, Phoenix holds a 2-1 edge, winning a pair of games in June, but losing their most recent matchup in July.
The first meeting saw the Mercury hand New York its second loss of the season, and the second matchup had Phoenix winning by 15. But after a month layoff the Liberty turned the tables in their third game this season, winning 89-76 behind 29 points, eight assists and five rebounds from Sabrina Ionescu. Jonquel Jones also went for 20 points with 11 rebounds for New York, and Alyssa Thomas led the Mercury with 20 points, 13 boards, eight assists and two steals.
A Liberty win means they would leap Phoenix in the standings and create path to possible win a tiebreaker. A Mercury win means they will hold a key advantage on New York as they will like go down to the last game of the season battling with the Atlanta Dream and Las Vegas Aces for seeding toward the top of the playoffs. It is very likely that two of those four teams will meet in the first round of the playoffs as the four seed and five seed.
