I want a bigger contract

Sophie Cunningham hinted at the possibility of not returning to the Indiana Fever in free agency. Cunningham played 30 games for the team in 2025, averaging 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. She suffered an MCL tear in August and was sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

She enjoyed a boost in popularity after playing next to Caitlin Clark. Her move to Indianapolis marked a major shift for the guard, as she had been with the Phoenix Mercury since being drafted there in 2019. She signed a one-year, $100,000 extension with the team in September 2024 before being traded to Indiana in February.

During Friday’s episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham’s co-host, West Wilson, questioned the state of her house, describing the walls as “naked.” The WNBA guard replied, explaining that she doesn’t have a permanent residence amid her uncertain future.

“I have barely anywhere to do anything, so I’m just trying to get organized.”

Sophie Cunningham continued, explaining her wish for a bigger contract in free agency, one that would allow her to buy a house:

“The next team I play for, I want a bigger contract, so then I can buy a house and be homey and cozy.” (Timestamp: 26:50).

Wilson chimed in, naming potential destinations for the Fever guard, whose reply drew attention to the uncertainty of her future.

“That’s crazy, it could be the Liberty, it could be New York City, it could also be the Lynx,” Wilson said.

“It could be anywhere,” Cunningham said.

Continuing her conversation with Wilson, Sophie Cunningham discussed her learnings from the ongoing CBA negotiations, explaining her misconceptions about the conditions needed for a lockout.

“I learned a lot because we’ve been having CBA calls,” she said. “I thought that if we didn’t have an agreement by the 31st, then it was a lockout, but that’s not true.” (Timestamp: 27:20)

“If both sides are continuing to negotiate, then you’re not in a lockout. Once one side stops, that’s when the lockout happens. That’s news to me.”

Many free agents like Cunningham are eagerly waiting for the negotiations to end so that they can negotiate new deals for the 2026 season. With a 30-day extension in place, the Indiana Fever guard’s future may be decided soon.
