Diego Lopes is eyeing Ilia Topuria’s UFC featherweight title and is ready to challenge him for it.
Lopes, a rising contender at 145 pounds, believes he deserves a shot at the title after a strong performance in 2024.
“I have a good streak, I’ve beaten three ranked fighters this year, and I’m currently ranked No. 3. Topuria has defeated the fighters above me in the rankings. We represent the new wave of the division and this fight would bring a fresh energy,” Lopes said.
Topuria recently made history by knocking out Max Holloway at UFC 308. With six finishes in eight UFC fights, he has established himself as a top fighter. Despite Topuria’s reputation, Lopes is not intimidated and sees himself as a strong matchup.
“I bring power, explosiveness, volume in my striking, and most importantly, fearlessness. I won’t back down. If the fight happens, it will be a clash, and I believe my style favors me,” Lopes stated.
If a title shot against Topuria is not possible, Lopes is open to an interim title fight with Alexander Volkanovski. However, he is confident that his performance justifies a title shot next.
“I’ve climbed the rankings quickly and proven myself against tough opponents. I believe I have earned the right to challenge for the title,” Lopes explained.
