Ilia Topuria, despite initial expectations of a lengthy featherweight title reign, has surprised fans with his revelation about his future in the sport.
‘El Matador’ has consistently proved his critics wrong and is now looking to do so once again with a new career choice. After impressive victories over Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski, the 27-year-old is shifting his focus away from the featherweight division.
In an interview with a Spanish media outlet, Ilia Topuria disclosed that his time as a featherweight champion is coming to a close.
Topuria is eyeing a move to the 155 lbs weight class in the near future and has identified a potential opponent for his return to the division.
“Maybe there’s a change coming,” Topuria shared during an interview with Spanish sports radio El Partidazo de COPE. “Yes, very likely [you saw my last fight at featherweight].”
“I’d like to move up to the next weight class, and since Islam [Makhachev] is the champion fighting in January, and he won’t be ready…”
“I’d like to fight against the No. 1 contender right now, who’s Charles Oliveira.”

Ilia Topuria has proven himself as one of the top fighters in the world and may soon have the opportunity to move up in weight and contend for a title.
His desired opponent, Charles Oliveira, is on track to earn a shot at the lightweight title following his win over Michael Chandler in his last fight.
While the former champion is eager to compete for UFC gold once more, he must first await Islam Makhachev’s upcoming title defense.
Makhachev is set to defend his championship against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311.
The Russian will headline the event on January 18 for his fourth defense of the lightweight title.
