Indiana Fever Make Tough Roster Decision Amid Caitlin Clark Absence

The Indiana Fever have found themselves in an injury crisis as the 2025 WNBA playoffs loom. The Fever have been without Caitlin Clark for the majority of the season as she has dealt with numerous injuries. Point guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald suffered season-ending injuries earlier this month, leaving Indiana without a point guard.

To address this problem, the Fever signed former Los Angeles Sparks guard Odyssey Sims to a seven-day hardship contract on Aug. 10. Four days later, they added point guard Kyra Lambert on the same deal.

But Lambert’s Indiana tenure didn’t last long.

Fever Cut Kyra Lambert

On Monday, five days into Lambert’s seven-day contract, Fever reporter Tony East revealed the team had released Lambert. The former Texas Longhorns guard spent two games with Indiana and didn’t see action until the final five seconds of Sunday’s win over the Connecticut Sun.

Prior to joining the Fever, Lambert had not played in the WNBA. She had spent her professional career playing overseas, most recently in Greece.

“Kyra Lambert has been released by the Fever, per the WNBA transaction log,” East wrote on X. “Today is day 5 since she signed a 7-day hardship contract.”

On the flip side, Indiana signed Sims to a second hardship contract. The former All-Star had her best game as a member of the Fever on Sunday, scoring 19 points in the win.

Fever Have Options at Point Guard

The Fever have a break before their next game on Friday against the Minnesota Lynx, giving the team a chance to reset. With Lambert’s release, a roster spot is opened. The timing has sparked hope Clark could finally return. The All-WNBA guard has missed 13 straight games, and the Fever would welcome her presence back in the lineup, especially after losing four of their last six.

If Clark is not ready to return, Indiana could also look into adding another free agent. One that comes to mind is Chennedy Carter, who has spent the summer playing in Mexico. The former Chicago Sky guard was a borderline All-Star in 2024, averaging 17.5 points and 3.1 assists per game.

Kelsey Mitchell, a natural wing, could be another option to slide into the point guard role. Over the month of August, she is leading the team in assists with 5.4 per game. However, against the Sun, Sims earned the start, her first with Indiana.
