England goalkeeper Mary Earps has finalized her move from Manchester United to Paris St-Germain, inking a two-year contract with the French powerhouse.
After spending five years and making 125 appearances with the Red Devils, the Lioness star mentioned in a statement that one of the main reasons for her transfer was the upcoming period of transition at the club which didn’t align with her current career stage.
“Therefore, I believe it’s the right time for me to embark on a new challenge,” she added.
Manchester United has been under scrutiny for their treatment of the women’s team, with Earps being the latest to announce her departure along with FA Cup final hero Lucía García and captain Katie Zelem.
Despite being offered a new contract by the WSL club, Earps declined and joined PSG on a free transfer.
According to the Guardian, Earps’ decision to leave Man United was motivated by her desire for Champions League football and more silverware, even though the club’s offer would have been financially more beneficial for the 31-year-old.
“Joining Paris Saint-Germain is an amazing opportunity. I am very proud to be a part of this club and I am excited to play alongside my new teammates,” Earps elaborated on her decision.
“Together, we will strive to bring glory to the club and make our fans proud. I am committed to contributing to our future success so that Paris Saint-Germain remains among the top clubs in Europe.”
Her departure was officially announced on Saturday, with Earps expressing on social media that the choice was not easy for her.
She went on to convey her appreciation to the Manchester United supporters, reflecting on her accomplishments, including winning the FA Cup this season.
“I am proud to have represented the badge in every league minute over the past five seasons, particularly breaking the record for the most clean sheets in a season in 2023,” she mentioned.
“Winning the FA Cup at Wembley was a dream come true, with your voices echoing in the stadium. I will cherish these memories and the support throughout the ups and downs.”
“Playing in front of you, whether at Leigh Sports Village or Old Trafford, has been an incredible experience. It is hard to believe I won’t be playing in front of you next season, and I am sad to bid farewell. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your unwavering support.”
The Nottingham-born player has previously been a part of Wolfsburg, Birmingham, Doncaster, and Reading, in addition to her time at United, now looking forward to a new chapter.
At PSG, she joins star players like Marie Antoinette Katoto, Grace Geyoro, Tabitha Chawinga, and others, aiming to challenge last year’s Première Ligue champions, Lyon.
