The Ireland Women’s Cerebral Palsy Team achieved a Bronze Medal at the 2024 International Federation of Cerebral Palsy Football (IFCPF) World Cup.
In their inaugural World Cup appearance, the Girls in Green triumphed over Japan with a score of 6-1 in the final game of the tournament held in Salou, Spain.
This remarkable accomplishment follows their victory in the IFCP Nations League last year and the successful organization of an International Friendly Series in Dublin.
Ireland kicked off the tournament with a resounding 20-2 win against Denmark, but suffered a defeat against the top-ranked USA. They bounced back with a 4-2 win over Japan in Group A before falling to Australia.
Under the guidance of coaches Aisling Conway and Irene Hehir, the team advanced to the Bronze Medal match against Japan for a rematch. Goals from Heather Jameson (2), Eva Walsh (2), Elsie Friel, and an own goal secured the victory.
In addition to the coaching staff, the squad received support from Anna Hogan (Physiotherapist) and Antoinette Neamt (Equipment Manager / Logistics).
The success of Cerebral Palsy Football can be attributed to the commendable efforts of the CP Football Academy led by Rachel Kavanagh and Donal Halpin, who have established clear development pathways for boys and girls over the years.
