The Phoenix Mercury caused a frenzy on Monday when the organization’s social media account posted a ticket promotion revolving around long-time star Diana Taurasi’s future.
The video included footage of the 42-year-old guard throughout her career and the words “If This Is It.” The Mercury have two more regular-season home games: Friday against the Connecticut Sun and Thursday, Sept. 19, against the Seattle Storm.
Taurasi is in the final year of a two-year contract and will be a free agent at the end of this season. Taurasi has spent 20 years with the Mercury organization and was drafted first overall by Phoenix in 2004.
The Mercury clinched a playoff spot last week and currently sit seventh in the seedings, two games behind the Indiana Fever. As a lower seed, the Mercury will start the best-of-three opening series with two on the road.
Taurasi has said only that she is done competing in the Olympics after winning a record sixth gold medal this summer. In July, ahead of Taurasi’s appearance in the 2024 Paris Olympics, she joked to reporters that they would see her in LA in 2028 “on the beach with a beer.”
But that didn’t stop fans from jumping to conclusions from the post.
