Is Russell Wilson a match for QB-needy New York Giants?

The New York Giants met with quarterback Russell Wilson last offseason but nothing materialized. Instead, he opted to sign a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wilson now appears headed back to free agency and once again, the Giants are in the market for a quarterback. They could sign or trade for a veteran or select one in the 2025 NFL draft.

Or both.

Wilson is an intriguing option given that he’s both a fit for Brian Daboll’s offensive system and has long desired to play in New York. And while he’s not the dominant quarterback he once was, he could fill the role as a bridge quarterback quite nicely.

Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports believes Wilson might be the ideal starter for the QB-needy Giants.

The Giants will probably pursue Kirk Cousins if he’s cut by Atlanta, or available in an affordable trade. But they don’t have a lot of tradeable assets and can’t afford to give up any draft picks for short-term solutions. And if Cousins does become a free agent, he’ll surely find better options than this.

Wilson, though, has long had an interest in playing in New York and even paid a visit to the Giants at the start of free agency last March. While he’s not a long-term option, and certainly hasn’t played like he’s in his prime anymore, the 36-year-old could bring some consistency to the position for the Giants — something they haven’t had in a while.

Vacchiano acknowledges that Wilson likely wouldn’t be enough to lead the Giants back to playoff success but could, at the very least, steady the ship.

Don’t underestimate how important that would be for head coach Brian Daboll and even GM Joe Schoen, both of whom likely need to win in 2025 to hold onto their jobs. Wilson isn’t going to lead New York on a title run, but he could at least help the club be competitive, which right now is a huge step up. It might even be enough to save Daboll and Schoen from being fired and buy them time to find a younger quarterback to start building around.

In 11 games this past season, Wilson completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also rushed for 155 yards and two additional touchdowns.

By comparison, Giants quarterbacks combined for 19 total touchdowns in 17 games.
