“It Sucks”: Sophie Cunningham Doesn’t Hold Back on Fever Star’s Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham expressed her disappointment that they lost another player due to injury. Despite that, however, she’s not losing her confidence in the team and what they are capable of.

The Fever suffered a major blow against the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday after Sydney Colson sustained a left leg injury. The veteran guard’s left knee buckled after landing on one foot while she was going for a rebound.

Colson took a hard fall and stayed down, looking in pain, before the Fever called a timeout to take her out. She was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game, ending up playing just one minute.

Speaking to reporters postgame, Cunningham was asked about Colson’s injury and how it affected the team for the rest of the contest. It’s worth noting that the Fever were blown out by the Mercury, 95-60.

Cunningham didn’t sugarcoat her words, admitting that “it sucks” to see Colson suffer an injury.

“You don’t ever want to see anyone be injured on any team. I feel like there’s been a lot of injuries this year in the W—harsh ones, I think,” stated the 28-year-old guard, who led the Fever in scoring in the loss with 18 points.

“And you know, it’s just another one. And Syd is still the heartbeat of our team.”

Cunningham, however, shared her belief that Colson is “going to be okay” and that the Fever can overcome the hurdle regardless of what happens.

Fever Facing Big Problems Amid Injury Woes

The Fever have every reason to be confident, especially since they have already survived the absence of All-Star guard Caitlin Clark. The playmaker has been sidelined since July 15 due to a groin injury.

Despite that, it’s hard not to be concerned for the Fever. There’s still no timetable for Clark’s return, and if Colson ends up missing more games, their backcourt rotation will be extremely thin.

It’s worth noting that Aari McDonald, who has filled in as a starting guard for Clark, also suffered a right foot injury against the Mercury.

It comes at such an inopportune time for the Fever, especially since they are fighting for a playoff spot. They dropped to 17-14 on the season with the loss, but remained fifth in the WNBA standings.

That being said, the Fever cannot afford to lose more games if they want to keep a top-eight seed. They play the Chicago Sky next on Saturday.
