The Dodgers had high hopes for Jack Flaherty when they traded for him from the Detroit Tigers on July 30. However, they were surprised by the 103-degree temperature at first pitch at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, a record high for a regular season game at the stadium.
Despite the extreme heat, Flaherty, a Los Angeles native, delivered a stellar performance on the mound, pitching into the eighth inning for the first time since the trade. He threw 7.1 shutout innings, allowing only four hits and no walks.
Flaherty showcased his pitching arsenal, relying heavily on his four-seamer, slider, and curveball. His dominant performance further solidified his status as a top choice to start in a potential postseason series for the Dodgers.
Facing a lineup with seven left-handed hitters, Flaherty strategically used his curveball against them, a tactic that has proven effective since joining the Dodgers. His performance against Cleveland demonstrated his ability to adapt and succeed in challenging situations.
A strong offensive effort by the Dodgers, including home runs by Shohei Ohtani and Max Muncy, supported Flaherty’s gem on the mound.
