Jenny Simpson – a reflection on her career
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Jenny Barringer Simpson is one of the top American distance runners and a global contender across distances from 1,500 meters to the marathon. Stuart Weir shares insights on her illustrious career!

Jenny Simpson – A Journey Through Her Career

Having recently declared the New York Marathon as her final professional race, Stuart Weir reflects on 16 years of following her incredible journey.

I first crossed paths with Jenny Simpson in a slightly awkward situation. Fresh off her victory at the World Championship in Daegu in 2011, I approached her at the winner’s press conference to request an interview for the next day. Little did I know, my conversation with her was live and broadcasted to the media center, leading to a mix-up. Regardless, Jenny graciously agreed to the interview, and that marked the beginning of many engaging conversations we had over the years.

Throughout three Olympics and six World Championships, I witnessed Jenny’s remarkable performances and had the opportunity to discuss her experiences with her.

In the 2008 Olympic 3000m steeplechase, Jenny claimed 8th place while setting an American record.

Reflecting on Beijing, Jenny recalled the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the 90,000-seat stadium and the unique experience of being among athletes from various disciplines in the village. She expressed gratitude for the Olympics’ impact on her perspective as an athlete and cherished the memories from China.

In the 2009 World Championships 3000m steeplechase, Jenny finished 4th and highlighted the special significance of competing in Berlin, where she honored Jesse Owens and experienced the historic stadium’s grandeur.

Her gold medal win in the 2011 World Championships 1500m marked a pivotal moment in her career. Transitioning from the 3000m to the 1500m was a decision guided by her coach’s confidence in her abilities, leading to a realization of her potential as a world-class athlete.

In the 2012 London Olympics 1500m, Jenny fell short in the semi-finals, acknowledging the pressure of defending her 2011 title and the challenges of pursuing success amidst heightened expectations.

The 2013 World Championships 1500m saw Jenny clinch a silver medal, reaffirming her status as a consistent contender on the global stage.

Despite facing setbacks like losing a shoe during the 2015 World Championships, Jenny maintained a resilient outlook, recognizing that such challenges are part of a long and successful career.

Her bronze medal finish in the 2016 Olympic Games 1500m showcased the grit and determination required to achieve success at the highest level, amidst personal doubts and setbacks.

The 2017 World Championships in London brought another silver medal for Jenny, underscoring her ability to deliver under pressure and learn from past disappointments.

In the 2019 World Championships 1500m, Jenny secured an 8th-place finish, setting the stage for deeper reflections on her journey in part two of this series.

Since 2015, Stuart Weir has written for RunBlogRun. He attends about 20 events a year including all most global championships and Diamond Leagues. He enjoys finding the quirky and obscure story.
