Jets’ Leonard Taylor III is living out NFL dream with assist from mom

An hour or two before Jets rookie free agent defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III plays his first NFL game on the first Monday night of the season in San Francisco, he will receive a text or a call. For the past two years, his mother, Chelita Smith, has been sending him motivational messages as a reminder.

According to Smith, she always tells him, “The greatness of a man comes from within himself.”

Leonard Taylor III, who was not drafted into the NFL just three months ago, had a strong training camp and is now living out his boyhood dream as a member of the Jets.

He attributes his inspiration to watching Lawrence Taylor play while growing up, adopting some of his aggressive playing style. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 305 pounds, Leonard Taylor III believes he can bring explosiveness to the field and be a “sack monster.”

Despite being disappointed by not being drafted, Taylor’s determination led him to excel during training camp and secure a spot on the team. His mother recalls a moment from his childhood when he wanted to quit football, but her encouragement pushed him to keep going.
