Tarik Cohen, who was aiming for a comeback this summer with the Jets, has decided to retire, informing the team of his decision.
Cohen, aged 29, was an All-Pro returner for the Bears in 2018, but his career had been plagued by injuries.
His most recent NFL regular-season game was in 2020, where he suffered a broken leg and two torn knee ligaments.
Following this injury, he was sidelined for the rest of the 2020 season and the entire 2021 season before attempting a return in 2022, where he tore his Achilles tendon. He spent last year on the Panthers’ practice squad.
The Jets had signed Cohen in the spring, considering the new kickoff rules and hoping to utilize him as one of their returners. Cohen impressed during the spring and initial week of camp.
During his statement on Tuesday, Cohen expressed his readiness and journey back to playing shape.
“I definitely feel all the way back,” Cohen said. “I’m just trying to show the Jets the explosiveness that I have, the smartness that I’ve gained from being in the league, and lift as I rise — help all the guys in my position group.”
