The Tasmania Jewels are thrilled to announce Australian basketball star Alanna Smith as one of the club’s official ambassadors, as part of the team name and brand launch on Tuesday.

Tasmanian born and bred Smith, the 2025 WNBA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, an Opals representative, and a standout talent across the WNBA and international leagues, brings global experience, elite professionalism, and strong community values to the role.

As Ambassador, she will support the Jewels’ mission to grow basketball across the state, inspire the next generation of Tasmanian athletes, promote the brand to a global audience, and enhance the team’s engagement with fans, partners, and grassroots programs.

“I’m incredibly honoured to become an ambassador for the Tasmania Jewels,” Smith said.

“It’s so special to now have a WNBL team in my home state, and I’m excited to help champion the team, connect with young players, and be part of building something meaningful for women’s sport in the state.”

Tasmania Jewels CEO Christine Finnegan said Smith’s role reflects the team’s commitment to excellence both on and off the court.

“Alanna’s influence within the basketball world is immense, and we’re delighted to welcome her as a home grown and humble Tasmanian into the Jewels family,” Finnegan said.

“Of course, we’d love to see her pull on a Jewels jersey one day but for now she will continue to dominate in the WNBA and we’re incredibly proud of her and pleased to have her involved even from afar.

“Her presence will play a key role in inspiring participation, empowering young women, and elevating the profile of our club across Tasmania and beyond.”

Smith will be joined by Tasmania JackJumpers head coach Scott Roth and former WNBL and NBL1 player and Assistant Tasmania Jewels general manager, Kayla Steindl, as Jewels ambassadors as the club builds momentum into the inaugural season and inspires a new generation of young athletes.

“I’m thrilled to continue to grow the game in Tasmania and have a meaningful impact on this state. I think the brand is fantastic and is a fitting counterpart to the JackJumpers,” Roth said.

“To have Alanna involved is great, she embodies our ‘Defend the Island’ mantra on the international stage, and I know she’ll inspire young girls around the state to pick up a basketball.”

Smith will host a free clinic in Hobart later this month as part of her role, with all fans that sign up to the Got the W membership entering a ballot draw for 80 spots, while Northern Members will be treated to a clinic by Kayla Steindl in January.

Fans can also engage with Smith, Steindl and CEO Christine Finnegan at a series of free Fireside Chat events at St Lukes Hobart, Launceston and Devonport Wellness Hubs this week, from December 3 to 5.
