Joe Cordina explains that he decided to switch trainers from Tony Sims to Ben Davison after experiencing a setback in his last fight. Losing his world title to Anto Cacace in Riyadh in May prompted Cordina to make a change after being with Sims since the beginning of his professional career in 2017.
Although the decision to leave Sims was difficult, Cordina emphasizes that it was an amicable split with the trainer who helped him secure two world titles at super-featherweight.
Speaking about the transition, Cordina expressed, “I was with him since the start of my career so almost eight years. It was like why fix something if it’s not broken? I was going until the wheels fell off and they fell off. Then you start assessing things. I just think at this stage in my career I just need to try something new, I need a freshen up. That’s all it is – a freshen up.”
Now training with Davison and Barry Smith in Harlow, Cordina feels positive about the change in training styles and believes it will benefit him in his upcoming fight against Shakur Stevenson for the WBC lightweight title in Riyadh on October 12.
Reflecting on the split, promoter Eddie Hearn remarked, “Sometimes people have a change. I think Tony and Joe’s relationship has been unbelievable. They’ve achieved so much – two-time world champion – but sometimes you feel like you need something fresh.”
