The Brewers have made some roster moves today. Joey Ortiz, an infielder, has been placed on the 10-day injured list with neck inflammation, retroactive to July 2. Enoli Paredes, a right-hander, has landed on the 15-day IL due to right forearm tendinitis. Infielder Vinny Capra and right-hander Janson Junk have been recalled to fill their spots.
Ortiz, 25, was acquired by the Brewers in a trade with the Orioles that also included Corbin Burnes and DL Hall. Ortiz has been a key player for Milwaukee, holding down the everyday third base position. In 74 games, he has shown impressive numbers at the plate and in the field.
While Ortiz’s injury doesn’t seem to be long-term, it is still a setback for the Brewers who have been dealing with multiple injuries this season. With several key players on the IL, the team made a trade for Aaron Civale to bolster their rotation.
The Brewers are currently leading the Central division, but the Cardinals are closing in. It’s crucial for Milwaukee to have Ortiz back soon, especially as the trade deadline approaches.
Andruw Monasterio has been filling in at third base in Ortiz’s absence, while Capra is expected to provide versatility off the bench. The team is also considering moving Sal Frelick back to third base, but for now Monasterio is in the lineup at that position.
Manager Pat Murphy has mentioned the possibility of Frelick returning to third base, but no immediate changes are expected. Mitchell’s return from the IL adds depth to the outfield, alongside Yelich, Chourio, and Perkins.
