The current pay gap between the WNBA and the NBA is a complex issue that sparks debate.
NBA players earn significantly more than WNBA players, with the NBA average salary for 2023-24 exceeding $12 million while WNBA players earn an average of just $116,580 (according to Word in Black). This difference is due to the NBA generating much higher revenue.
WNBA players acknowledge this fact, as explained by Jonquel Jones, New York Liberty superstar and 2024 WNBA Finals MVP, during her recent appearance on “The Pivot Podcast”.
Jones clarified, “We’re not seeking NBA player salaries, but rather fair percentages compared to what NBA players earn.”
She added, “As the league grows and attracts more viewers, leading to increased TV games, there will eventually be more revenue for players.”
Jones also highlighted the need for future WNBA players to benefit without having to play overseas for better pay.
The WNBA’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) ends after the 2025 season. It will be crucial for the negotiators of the next CBA to address the players’ salary expectations.
