Despite his son’s success as a Formula One ace, Jos Verstappen remains active behind the wheel, participating in rallies. This October, he will be racing in a 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RS at the Tour de Corse Historique, his first classic rally.
Verstappen has a background in pavement racing, having competed in F1, A1 Grand Prix, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After taking a break to support his son Max, Jos returned to racing in 2022, achieving six wins in the Belgian Rally Championship, with his latest victory at the Rally van Haspengouw in February.
He made his World Rally Championship debut at the 2022 Ypres Rally, finishing sixtieth in WRC2.
Verstappen’s co-driver, Renaud Jamoul, noted that while he may not have the same terrain-reading skills as a specialist, his braking sensitivity from his circuit racing days is exceptional.
The 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RS is a rare and powerful car, built to Group 3 specifications with a top speed of 244.62 km/h. Only fifty-six models were ever produced, making it highly sought after by car collectors.
Romain Joffroy, who prepared the Porsche for Verstappen, mentioned that Jos is accustomed to handling older cars with H-gearboxes, and is sure to enjoy the rally experience with this unique vehicle.
The Tour de Corse Historique is a historic rally for vehicles built between 1947 and 1990, taking place from 5-12 October with five stages and 386 kilometers of timed sections.
