Joseph Parker: Anthony Joshua fight ‘step too far’ from Jake Paul – I’d like to see Tyson Fury fight AJ instead, public want me to fight Usyk, I want to retire at the top like Lennox Lewis
Jake Paul doesn’t actually want to fight AJ – it’s a step too far
JP: “Jake Paul’s a big name and he’s done many things in boxing, from where he came from to where he is now is incredible. He’s done great things, but there’s a big difference between a real fighter and a fighter who does it for attention.
“I’m sure he doesn’t really want to fight AJ, I don’t know. Why would you want to put yourself in there with AJ who’s a beast? Sometimes there’s a step too far.”
Tyson Fury will come back if he puts the work in – I would like to see him fight AJ
JP: “If Tyson has the heart for it, if he wants to put in the work with training, and if he wants to achieve anything else in boxing [he will comeback].
“He’s achieved everything there is to in boxing, obviously not undisputed, but if he wants to come back he should. If he doesn’t want to come back, enjoy his retirement, enjoy his family time.
“I would like to see him fight AJ. I would love to see it. It’s been spoken about for a long, long time.”
I would back Deontay Wilder to beat Francis Ngannou in a boxing match
JP: “Ngannou is a heavy-handed man. He can punch. Wilder can also punch. I did feel a few punches that landed on my gloves and I thought to myself ‘lucky this didn’t land on my chin’. He punched very hard.
“But there’s many different Wilders. The Wilder that fought me is probably different to the Wilder that fought Tyson Fury.
“With Francis, I think he’s got the size, he’s also got a long reach and he’s got confidence coming off a great win in this PFL fight that he had not long ago.
“But you would have to say Wilder is the favourite because of the boxing experience and being in boxing his whole life and being a champion for a long time.”
The general public want me to fight Usyk but there are no talks
JP: “I feel like the fight with Dubois is dead. I feel like the fight with Usyk is dead because they want to fight each other and unify and become undisputed.
“For Usyk, if he does it [becomes undisputed] again, he’ll be the first fighter in history who’s done it twice. I can understand where Usyk is coming from [wanting to fight Dubois]. I can even understand where Dubois is coming from.
“The timing for him getting sick is not the best timing just before our fight. But, if I was him I would do the same thing, I would go and fight for all the belts.
“My viral video was filmed at Karekare beach here in New Zealand with like black sand. Kerry Russell was behind the idea, he’s a big part of my team. He was filming a lot for YouTube, like our camps and our training, and he came up with the idea for these videos.
“The response from the general public and people who support boxing want to see me and Usyk fight. But I don’t think people understand, there’s a lot more that goes behind the scenes
“At the moment the fight between myself and Usyk is not even talked about. But doing all these videos is fun. It takes you away from boxing. There’s a lot of bloopers and we’re just enjoying ourselves while making some fun content.”
I’m not interested in a crossover fight – I want to retire at the top like Lennox Lewis
JP: “No, I’m not interested in these crossover fights. I’m interested in world titles, fighting the most serious fighters, the top level fighters.
“And once I’ve ticked everything off and fought for the last time. I’m not coming back to do any of these things because I think once you retire you should leave it like that
I’d love to fight in Samoa with Jai Opetaia on the card
JP: “It would be so beautiful to have a fight in Samoa. I fought there in 2016, but If I could fight there again with everything that I’ve achieved and everything that’s happened, the ups and downs to where I am now, with myself and Jai Opetaia on the card, it would be incredible.
“I do it in Upolu, somewhere in town and outdoors. Build it – a ring and a cover, and then just everyone should just come and crowd around and watch. The whole of Samoa could come.”
If I were Wladimir Klitschko I’d stay retired – but it would be good to fight him
JP: “If it was me I would stay out of boxing. But Klitschko does keep himself in tremendous shape and he’s always training. He’s always sparring. I did see him recently in Saudi Arabia. He was in tip-top shape.
“I would stay out, because I’ll be happily retired, and he’s done pretty much dominated for ten years already, but if he wants to come back
“It’ll be intriguing to see what he can do in the ring again.
“Parker versus Klitschko could be a good fight but it would have excited me when he was fighting and still active.”
