In what is being considered a successful military operation, the United States invaded Venezuela, capturing the country’s president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores. Venezuelans haven’t held their thoughts on the world events, with UFC ace Julianna Pena the latest to discuss what the changes mean to her.
The 36-year-old has exceeded expectations since battling her way into the octagon by winning the 18th season of The Ultimate Fighter. After suffering several setbacks on her way to UFC gold, the bantamweight finally made her championship dreams a reality in her underdog win over Amanda Nunes in 2021.
No matter the status of the person, politics remains a touchy subject for most. However, that wasn’t the case for Julianna Pena, who took the chance to reminisce about the beauty of Venezuela’s history.
“When I was a kid, my parents took us to Venezuela,” Pena said in a statement referencing the events in her home country. “It was beautiful.”
“I loved learning about the history, the culture, and everything that made the country so special. There was a time when Venezuela was one of the richest and most promising nations in the world.”

Pena later explained how her people have suffered during Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorship.
“Over the last 15 years, everything changed. What was once thriving fell into chaos under the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro. Visiting became dangerous, and our family was warned not to return.”
“My relatives have suffered in ways I wouldn’t wish on anyone — real hardship, fear, and loss.”
“Because of that, I fully support what my President and his administration accomplished on January 3rd. I’m hopeful that Venezuela is finally on a path toward freedom and a future that looks more like the country I remember from my childhood.”
“I’m proud to be Venezuelan — whether people accept it or not.”
