Justin Gaethje is not interested in a rematch with Michael Chandler.
In 2018, Gaethje and Chandler engaged in a thrilling Fight of the Year, with Gaethje emerging victorious. Chandler recently expressed interest in a rematch during an interview on Bussin’ with the Boys, but Gaethje has other plans.
He would rather face a new opponent in his next fight, and if a rematch is on the cards, it won’t be with Chandler.
“I’m more interested in a rematch with (Charles) Oliveira or (Dustin) Poirier,” Gaethje shared with Helen Yee. “I prefer something new. I think a fight with Poirier would be great if it’s his last. I believe we are both top contenders, and that wouldn’t be the case if (Chandler and I) fought each other.”
“I’m satisfied with a 1-1 record against Chandler. I also see potential matchups with Dan Hooker, and I’m not sure if Alexander Volkanovski will return to lightweight. Max Holloway is moving to 155, so a rematch with him would be great. As the number 3 contender, I have a lot of options. I have requested a fight in March, likely in Vegas. I’ll be there.”
Chandler’s interest in a rematch with Gaethje follows his recent loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC 309. Gaethje had high praise for Oliveira, acknowledging his tough and impressive fighting style.
“Oliveira is a tough opponent,” Gaethje commented. “He’s a problem. He has shown tremendous growth and skill. It’s impressive to see fighters like him and Max Holloway, who have been competing at a high level since a young age, go through challenges and emerge successful. The fight between Oliveira and Chandler was truly impressive to watch.”
