Before last year’s draft, Kamilla Cardoso came in with all the momentum! Winning the NCAA championship, going undefeated with the South Carolina Gamecocks. However, she suffered a shoulder injury that created an early hurdle in her WNBA career. Once again before the next W, the Brazilian is in red-hot form, thanks to her achievement in China. Unfortunately, though, this launched a different conversation entirely—with Sky teammate Angel Reese caught in the crossfire.
First let’s look at the former Gamecocks achievement. “Breaking: Kamilla Cardoso wins WCBA International Player of the Year! She averaged 20.8 PPG (64.7% FG), 10.2 RPG, and 3.3 APG in 31.4 minutes, leading Shanghai to 5th place. This award, WCBA’s MVP for foreign players, was won last year by Jonquel Jones. Congrats to Cardoso on this well-deserved honor!” MVP in China, Cardoso made the most of her off-season. Her production increased in comparison to her rookie-year stint with the Chicago Sky.
The 6-foot-7 star averaged 9.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game during her rookie season in the WNBA. For the Shanghai Swordfish, the points certainly doubled, to 20.8, and even the assists were close to doubling with 3,3. Seeing this, a fan took a jab at Angel Reese and the Sky franchise. “Kamilla without Angel holding her back >>.”

The ‘Sky Scrapers,’ aka Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, had bright moments on the court but still wasn’t enough. So, frustrated Chicago fans want this season to be different, with the Brazilian having more opportunities.

Despite her winning pedigree in the Unrivaled, fans don’t back Angel Reese for the W success
Angel Reese ended her season in the Unrivaled as the DPOY and the champion with the Roses BC. She was the 17th-highest scorer in the league, with 13.3 points, and led the league in rebounds per game at 12.1. Which is very similar to her rookie WNBA numbers; 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds. This could be the reason why the fans want Cardoso as the main option going forward. “Yep … let’s see if the sky learn anything. ”
Because of her mobility and the size advantage, many mock drafts had ranked the Brazilian higher. The Sky franchise did the same, selecting her overall number 3 pick. With their second pick, at number 7 they selected Angel Reese. So, a netizen wanted the team to look at it again and give more chances to Cardoso. “Yep, that’s why she was the #3 pick in the draft.”
Some were even quick to point out Teresa Weatherspoon’s departure was because of more focus on Angel Reese. “tyler marsh needs to run that offense through killa kamilla. tspoon force feeding reese is what got her fired.” The new coach previously echoed the message “be effective” to both of his stars. It seems Cardoso took the lesson to heart. With 52% from FG in the WNBA, she upped it to 64.7% with the Shanghai team. “The Chicago Sky need to utilize her this upcoming season as the number 1 option and the teams best player Unlike last year barely playing at times and getting the ball for whatever reason,” added another fan.

Last season’s woes have not completely healed for some of the fans. In order to perform better than last year, will the new HC bring in the change? Let’s not forget that Angel Reese has suffered a wrist injury twice now. Is that also the reason why the Sky loyalists want to trust Kamilla Cardoso more?
