Kansas guard Shakeel Moore may be sidelined for up to eight weeks due to a foot injury sustained in a pickup game. This setback means that the Jayhawks could potentially be missing a second guard at the beginning of the season, following Elmarko Jackson’s knee injury. Moore, a fifth-year senior transfer, is expected to return around the start of the regular season.
Fifth-year senior guard Shakeel Moore won’t be participating in Kansas Basketball Boot Camp drills
“He’ll be out for an extended period of time,” revealed Kansas coach Bill Self. “He underwent surgery two weeks ago, and we can’t pinpoint his exact return date. He won’t be ready for the initial phase of our regular practices in late September. We anticipate having him back for the start of the season, but probably not until close to that time.
“The surgery was successful, and they expect a speedy recovery. However, he won’t be back until about six to eight weeks from now.”
Moore will not be taking part in KU Basketball Boot Camp drills, which kick off on Tuesday and run through the following week.

Throughout 124 NCAA regular-season games in his career (68 starts) spanning four seasons (2020-24), Moore has averaged 8.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 24.5 minutes per game. He has shot 42.4% from the field, 31.2% from beyond the arc, and 70.7% at the free throw line.
Originally starting at NC State before transferring to Mississippi State, Moore posted 7.9 points per game last season with the Bulldogs. He achieved career highs with 9.8 points, 2.3 assists, and 1.7 steals in 32 games (15 starts) during the 2021-22 season.
Mississippi State, NC State had a combined record of 30-15 when Moore scored 10+ points
Standing at 6-foot-1, Moore averaged 7.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists during the previous season at Mississippi State. He reached double figures in scoring 13 times, hitting a season-best 16 points against Murray State on Dec. 13, 2023.
The Bulldogs and Wolfpack won 30 out of 45 games when Moore scored at least 10 points. He also recorded multiple steals in 41 out of 99 games with the Bulldogs.
Furthermore, Moore committed to playing for the Jayhawks shortly after Jackson’s injury, which will sideline him for the upcoming season. Coach Self has retained veteran guard Dajuan Harris Jr. and backup Jamari McDowell from last season’s squad that achieved a 23-11 record. Additionally, he has bolstered the backcourt through transfers.
Self has secured transfers such as AJ Storr from Wisconsin, Rylan Griffen from Alabama, Zeke Mayo from South Dakota State, David Coit from Northern Illinois, and Noah Shelby from Rice. The team will also benefit from the return of Second-team All-American Hunter Dickinson and veteran KJ Adams Jr. in the frontcourt.
