Wallaceburg’s Kate Martin has grown into a leader with the Western University women’s hockey team.
Martin is a key member of the Mustangs defensive core. Now in her third year at Western, Martin was named as one of Western’s assistant captains at the beginning of the year.
Among her highlights this season, include a four-game point streak in November.
Martin, a nursing major, has also done well off-the-ice, as she has been named to the scholar athlete list.
Going into Friday’s game, the Mustangs are 8-8 on the season.
Wallaceburg ties: Western’s women’s hockey head coach Brittany Howard worked as a head coach and skills professional with the Pittsburgh Penguins girls hockey program, prior to coming to Western this season. She shared an office with former Wallaceburg Laker player Shaun Suisham, He has been coaching the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite girl’s teams for the past six seasons, and is currently the organization’s director of girls hockey.
Prior to getting involved in girls hockey, Suisham spent 10 year in the NFL as a kicker, including five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
