NWSL K.C. Current owners, including Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, have “met with the WNBA” and are “in contention to bring the league’s next franchise to Kansas City,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (X, 10/30). In K.C., Blair Kerkhoff notes the WNBA will expand by three cities over the next two seasons with the Golden State Valkyries and teams in Toronto and Portland. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said that the league would “like to add a 16th team by 2028.” Kerkhoff notes K.C. is “throwing its hat in the ring” as one of “several cities that have expressed interest in an expansion team” (K.C. STAR, 10/30). CBSSPORTS.com’s Austin Nivison notes if the ownership group is successful in bringing a WNBA team to K.C., it would become the fourth local pro team co-owned by Mahomes, who also has minority stakes in the Royals and Sporting K.C. (CBSSPORTS.com, 10/30).
