Sophomore standout Kendre Harrison from Reidsville (N.C.) has been named the National Grid-Hoop Player of the Year for 2023-24. He is poised to go down in history as one of the greatest in the U.S., but his journey is far from over.
In December, we paid tribute to the late NBA Hall of Famer George McGinnis. McGinnis, known for his gentle demeanor, was also a standout Grid-Hoop athlete in U.S. high school history. Over 55 years ago, McGinnis became the first two-time National Grid-Hoop Player of the Year during his time at Washington (Indianapolis). Joe Girard III, who made a mark with Clemson in the NCAA Elite Eight in 2024 and is currently part of the Toronto Raptors’ summer league team, was also recognized for his achievements at Glens Falls (N.Y.) five years ago.
This year’s honoree is Kendre Harrison from Reidsville (N.C.), a versatile 6-foot-7, 240-pound player excelling in tight end, defensive end, and power forward positions. Known for breaking backboards and dominating on the Nike EYBL 16U circuit with Team CP3, Harrison is now the first sophomore to receive the prestigious award for his performance as a football-basketball combo athlete.
Harrison’s potential has caught the attention of recruiting experts, who believe he could one day join the elite group of athletes who excelled in hoops and went on to the NFL. Despite being just a sophomore, Harrison has already made history and continues to impress with his skills on the field and the court.
While there have been standout seniors in the class of 2024 like Terry Bussey and Caden Pinnick, it is clear that Harrison stands out among the underclass choices. Junior C.J. Ingram has also shown promise, leading his team to state titles in both football and basketball, but Harrison’s accomplishments at a higher level of competition set him apart.
On the football field, Harrison played a pivotal role in Reidsville’s championship win, making significant contributions on both offense and defense. With impressive stats in receptions, yards, touchdowns, tackles, sacks, and more, Harrison’s impact on the game is undeniable.
